Personal Profile

Hi I’m Mike, a UK based, specialist drone pilot working in the film and TV industry. As well as working as a freelancer for a number of high end drone operators in the UK, I’m also the director of my own aerial filming company, Beehive Aerial Productions, based near Bristol.

I’m BNUC-S and BMFA certified pilot with my own CAA PfCO and I have a background flying full size fixed wing aeroplanes, 3D RC helicopters and FPV racing drones. Prior to getting into drones, I was a professional filmmaker and photographer – basically a total nerd when it comes to cameras and lenses! So flying drones in the film and TV industry was an obvious and natural progression to make!

In 2011, I put together my first flying camera platform. It was based on a 700 sized MA Ion X-Cell 3D helicopter and carried a servo controlled, custom camera mount, on which a Canon 550D sat awkwardly! The helicopter had no stabilisation at all and in reality was very limited in it’s application besides taking still photographs. But it started me on a journey of discovery and fascination which paved the way for my career as a professional drone pilot.

I was one of the first people to fly the highly regarded Shotover U1 ultra heavy lift cinema drone and have since accrued many hours on this platform, which falls in the 20-150kg weight category. I also fly a wide range of other SUAS, most regularly the Freefly Alta 8, Gryphon Dynamics X8, Vulcan Raven and DJI Inspire 2. Alongside these, I’ve flown and helped develop a number of other custom made heavy lift systems, from an enormous drone which flies autonomously at low level across the Kuwait Oil lakes,  to a swarm of drones which look like TIE Fighters and carry LED screens!

As well as freelancing and flying on behalf of other operators, I’m also equipped with my own gear, including a Freefly Alta 8 / Movi Pro setup, a DJI Inspire 2 a Mavic 2 Pro and several FPV racing drones which are all setup for smooth, cinematic filming.

Throughout my career, I’ve accrued lots of valuable experience working on large, high pressure film sets and I’ve got to know the industry very well. You can head to my projects page or check out my IMDB listing to see some of my recent credits.
